Head bolts on L98 Motor

Hi,

I was just wondering if the head bolts on my 1989 Camaro Iroc-Z, L98 motor are torque to yield or not. And if not, does anyone know what they need to be torqued to?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Head bolts on L98 Motor

No they are not.

Yes we do.

They should be 60-65 ft-lbs. DO NOT overtorque them, as this will cause the gaskets to leak. Put sealer on the threads. NOT silicone; something that stays soft forever, and acts as a good thread lube. The Permatex "Auto Pipe Thread Sealer With Teflon" is probably the best thing to use. Torque the bolts in stages, like, all 17 to 35, then to 50, then to 60. Follow the torque sequence you are looking at right now in your manual. Use a beam or gauge type wrench, NOT a clicker. Make sure the bolt is still turning when you think you've reached 60. Once you reach 60 on all ofthem, go back over them again, and make them all move one last time, but not all the way to 65.
