What engine block number is this?
I have not been able to find this one ANYWHERE. To me, it reads 14094768. We thought the last digit might be another 6, which matches up with a 305, but the shape of it is not like the six right next to it. I'm pretty sure it's an 8, maybe a 3.
here is a nice big picture, thank god for cell phone cameras.

If you search the list of casting numbers, only one of them comes close. 14094766...305...86-up...2...One-piece rear seal
It matches the 86 Trans Am 305 in your profile.
Check the pad in front of passengers side head... Look for the stamped serial number. If it matches the last 6 digits of your VIN number it's the original engine.

Yup, 305, prolly the original one for the car... not much of a candidate for short block work.
