L31 Vortec Heads where can I still get them
L31 Vortec Heads where can I still get them
I want them because I have a 50000 mile long block 90percent rebuilt 305 motor with flat top pistons no leaks runs smooth as silk withy my msd ignition.
Will everything just swap over, Can I use my smog headers for emissions and air pump?
With aftermarket headers are there ones that work with the smog lines or do people drill holes so they work?
I think this is my best investment for my tbi motor, also where can I get that 4 barrol tbi throtle body?
If I can get a lt1 cam will it work you have to swap cylinders 4 and 7 right on the distributor?
Last thing since im not looking to spend too much since I have to replace the steering linkage too and scrub the rust off my rear axle and buy new mounts while everythings out mostly for the tranny.
How much will I spend in reality because anyone who has done this setup far made over 200 horsepower will I need to upgrade my 55 injectors I found two rebuilt 60 to 70 cc upgrades. Will I need a better fuel pump for fuel setup?
Thats about it looking to spend about 2000 dollars so I can run atleast a mid 15 but I got t tops and the car is light im carful to not flex my subframe when gassing.
Thanks to everyone who has answered my questions so far I have so far almost completed my auto tech degree and looking forward to taking a few other areas of interest like minors in physcology, criminology and other classes like that so im better at understanding people. I did computers my whole life but the feild is so braod now days they dont take someone who dedicated there life to computers and mcse classes with experince on datacenter networking server setups etc over some idiot who has 2 years working at bestbuy thats because its almost a standard to have anyone now.
I am 25 year old male and just need to focus on life projects good jobs until college is over and since I never dated in high school to age 22 from being ill bed ridden and home ivs and shots I struggle more then others with things.
If you have good tips lets me know even on life?

Re: L31 Vortec Heads where can I still get them
You can still get them from 96-99 Cehvy/GMC trucks and vans. Those are getting pretty common in the junkyards these days. You can also buy them completely prepped, ready to bolt on, from Scoggin-Dickey and Summit and various other places.
Yes everything will swap over, except your intake manifold. The intake ports are in the wrong place to match up to those heads. That's what makes them "Vortec"; they moved the intake ports. Best way to go is a good 4-bbl intake such as a Performer RPM, and a TBI adapter. The TBI Vortec intakes (either GM or Edlebrock, same exact thing) SUCK and cost too much besides.
No LT1 cams don't have the cyl swap so you don't have to worry about that. But those aren't really the best cam for that swap anyway, not any of the 4 or 5 of them, especially not the B-body ones; the ZZ4 cam is better. You can find those on eBay cheeeep all the time.
Yes you can get headers with the AIR hookups.
No you don't need to mess with 4-bbl TBIs on a 305. If all you've got is $2000, you need to be SUPER CAREFUL and spend it only where it does the most good. That ain't it.
Life, can't help you there.... I have the same problem. Been looking for a good life store for many decades now but haven't come across one. If you do, please share.

Ok and how much do a good set of valves and valve springs cost if there not reusible, If i buy the heads used im just going to clean them grind the valves etc. Then buy some slightly higher rpm valve springs from comp or something.
I can use a laptop to adjust my fuel trims I might just road dyno it I live in a small town nobody around and high speed backroads 45-50mph and a nice long 60-70 mph depending on time of day going for miles with places to pull off.
I like tbi it has great mileage effency and I think a set of 60+ injectors so It does not run lean. Might either change to the pushrods out or rockers but that cost alot depending on my rocker arm geometry or should I just pull old pushrods the vortec engine just incase?

Re: L31 Vortec Heads where can I still get them
I got my vortec heads through craigslist. Easier than digging through junkyards. They were from a 98 k2500. Be careful about valve lift if you dont mod them, or you might want to buy the pre-modded ones from scroggin dickey that are ready for like .550 lift.
Edelbrock makes headers with the air tubes. Required almost no mods to get them to fit. Only issue I remember was that you have to turn the EFI heat riser valve around. Well when I did that I had to file about a half inch notch on the edge of my bellhousing because the linkage for the vacuum thing on it was rubbing. I dont know if your car even uses that or just the spacer. If its the spacer, no issue. Also the spark plug wires will have to be routed underneath not over the top because the air tubes get in the way. I think hooker makes ones with the air tubes too.
My original pushrods worked fine. But my engine's an 84ish with hyd flat lifters. If your originals dont work and you get heads without the original vortec engine's ones, I have a set I'd sell for almost nothing. My heads came with all of the top end crap thats just sitting in a box I'll never use. Pulleys, accessories, brackets, complete intake, lifters, pushrods etc.
Oh and just keep working on that car. It was a bad year for me with girl drama and my band breaking up, and having something productive to do like building my 350 really helped keep my mind off it. Also maybe keep an old hood or fender or something in the garage because when you come across a big problem or drop that bolt under the car a few too many times, its better not to smash anything good if you become enraged. Thats my life advice.
