1988 T/A Do I have a Shift Kit and or Chip??
Hey guys this is my first post here so I am really not 2 sure I hope I am in the right msg board but anyways here it goes. I bought myself a 1988 Trans Am w 305 t.p.i and the 700r4 tranny for $600 from some chick who got a new 3.4 l v6 Firebird Lol. She said her boyfriend did some work 2 it like an aftermarket chip as well as a shift kit. I had a hard time believing any of this really but since it was only $600 I figured I was getting a steal. The car is black on black w/ factory T-tops with little rust(but not much) and good condition interior. I bought the car with no exhaust at all but just recently put flowmaster with 2" pipes. The engine has 175000 miles and runs like a dream!! No leaks, misfires, noises, etc. Just starts right up and runs strong
My main question is I am trying to figure out if the thing really has the chip and shift kit. It has some mega power for a 305 I can tell you that I have driven many Camaros and other things w/ the 305 and those were complete dog's in the performance department. This thing has torque 2 the point where I need to make sure I am not holding a drink or something when going from a stoplight or else I can expect a change of clothing Lol. When cruising say at 40mph the car seems to stay in the lowest gear possible when the tranny is in drive. No matter what speed I am at really when I let off of the gas it seems to want to pull the car to a slower speed very quickly which tells me that it is staying in the lowest gear possible. Is this a charecteristic trait of a "shift Kit"?? Also no matter what the temp is outside or how long the car has been running my Temp. Gauge always sits right in the same spot. Right around 50 F or so i believe. I was thinking this may be the chip she was speaking of tricking the computer in to thinking the engine is always getting colder air than it really is therefore resulting in slight H.P gain. Could this be the case?? If so is this what all performance chips do?? I know my post is long with to u guy's may be common sense questions however I am slightly ne to the scene and I appreciate any help given to me!
