car wont start, sputter, nothin in the rain

just looking for a second opinion. car wont even try to start when it really wet out from rain or for a while after it rains. Im guessing its plug wires absorbing the moisture, but any other input would be greatly appreciated. thanks all

Well, that's a good guess or it could also be a hairline crack in the distributor cap. Try spraying it down with some WD40. That will displace the moisture and it should crank then. If it does, then you can replace it or the wires. My brother had an old Pinto that had that problem and that's where I learned this trick from.

Hey, I'm currently having the same issue. My 92 RS will crank, and crank but will not turn over. This has only happened since the rain has been heavy in my area. Did replacing the wires work? Were there any other suggestions?

you guys could try spraying WD-40 around the cap and wires one at a time and see if she'll start. Whichever one sprayed before it started is your culprit and should be replaced

@iroczracer07 - I will be doing that. I just bought the car, and I believe its been sitting a while...I'm assuming it'll be worth changing plugs, wires, distributor cap & rotor and ignition coil in efforts to prevent this going forward... Your input and advice is appreciated

Yep sounds like a cracked distributor cap. changing the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires is definitely worth the money due to the age of these cars

Not sure if I could help you with that, I've never had to replace mine. I'm pretty sure that certain auto parts stores can test them for you

My opinion is go to a dark place, crank and see if anything lights up. In a lot of cases you'll have a spark show. Plugs/dist cap/rotor (brass contact) are a good start. Get some NGK, Delco or Autolites. You don't really need anything high $$. If you go with high $$$ stick to say Delco plats and skip anything gimicky. Another thing you can do is try to shoot some carb cleaner into the carb/throttle body and see if it fires. If so, you need to look for fuel issues and not ignition ones.
