Fuel Pump Whine?
A few days ago my mechanic replaced the fuel pump. The new one works, but when he was testing it, it started whining. He's going to pull out the new one and get a different one to put in. He thinks it will take care of the whining.
I have a friend who works on cars, specifically older GM cars. He says that any time you replace a GM fuel pump with a non GM fuel pump, you're going to get a whine no matter what. My friend says that this is because the aftermarket fuel pumps actually put out more pressure than what they're rated for and this is what causes the whine.
I'm looking for other opinions. Who's right, my mechanic or my friend? Right now the whine is bad. But I don't want to go through the frustration of putting in another aftermarket pump only to have to pull that and go with a GM pump.
What do you all think?

Re: Fuel Pump Whine?
I have a 2000 chevy silverado and the fuel pump has whined since it was new, I have 140,000mi and it's still pumping fine. I would say check the pressure and if it checks o-k, it should be fine. Unless the whine is so loud it's distracting?

Yeah, the whine is really loud, but it still works. Even with the radio cranked, you can hear it. Is there a way to reduce the noise?

It's common for replcement pumps to be louder than the originals. But not so that you can hear them over the radio. I'd put another one in.

It's rather late to jump in on this thread, but I've got the same problem. The fuel pump on my 89 Iroc was replaced just before I bought it and it has the most annoying whine/hum to it. Even with the radio on I can still detect it. I'm pretty bummed to hear that that's the way it's going to be with a non-GM pump.

I had the mechanic replace the replacement pump and there's no more noise. I guess it depends on the pump.
