What carburetor and intake to buy?

Hello friends,

I am in the market for a new intake manifold and carburetor for my 1984 Camaro. Currently I have an Edelbrock Torker2 intake with EDELBROCK PERFORMER SERIES 600 CFM 1406. Price is not an issue, but I want a reliable carburetor and intake that is on the performance side of things as opposed to economy. The engine I am running is a 355 with 327 heads, engine has lots of performance goodies.... engine was fully rebuilt at AAMCO machine company. So please guys let me know what is my best combination and why, if you have photos I would appreciate them too. A photo is worth a thousand words.
thanks in advance.

What "performance goodies" does the engine have, and which 327 heads are on it?

Re: What carburetor and intake to buy?

the heads are from a 327, not sure which heads they are but I had them completely redone, as for the engine besides having it completely rebuilt, I have a high volume oil pump, holley fuel pump, and it has an rv cam. The rebuild was done about 4 years ago, and so far I have near 15,000 km on the motor. I only drive it from june-oct every year. Is there a marking or something visable on the heads that would indicate which 327 heads I have? But getting back on topic...any ideas of a good intake and carburetor??

Re: What carburetor and intake to buy?

You might want a better intake, but there isn't anything there that really demands something better than a 600 CFM Edelbrock.

Edelbrock Performer RPM intake... the standard non-airgap intake.

600CFM is plenty for the mods you have listed.

You can use the air gap too, if you want.

Re: What carburetor and intake to buy?

The Air-Gap intakes separate the intake runners from the lifter valley and the hot engine oil. This makes for a cooler and more dense intake charge but also hinders fuel atomization at low engine RPMs.

This becomes a problem when used with your "RV" cam because its designed to make power from idle to probably 4.5-5k RPMs. Also the intended use of the car wasnt stated and i assumed you were going to drive this on the street. Combine that with your colder Canadian weather and you will have low rpm drivability issues.

If you decide to go with a more performance oriented cam, and dont mind some cold weather drivability issues, then the air-gap is the way to go.

In real-world street driving, I doubt you'd notice a difference between the two.
