Engine Build

I have a 1991 z with a bone stock TPI 305. The car is all original and I am trying to keep it as close as possible.
My problem is I want a few more ponies without swapping the 305. I know that I am up against the wall building a 305 but I am bound and determined to make do.
I know that many of you have built 305's and got some pretty good performance out of them. I am on a budget and I really do not want to have to do much computer work, as I find that it is hard to send an e-prom off and it perform correctly when you get it back.
Could any of you lead me in the right direction building this engine?
Two things to keep in mind before posting:
1. I am on a budget
2. I do not want a 350 in my car, I want to keep the 305.

Thanks for all of the advice.

Re: Engine Build

if the car's all original and you're looking for more power, you best start is always intake and exhaust. without getting these taken care of, every other change is not going to be to its full potential.

From what I've read, those engines benefit more from headers and a full exhaust than anything else.

On the intake side, there isn't much you can do without having to resort to turning the ECM. You can try upping the fuel pressure a bit as that usually helps some. A cold air intake, or CAI kit, is another worthwhile mod and you can easily make you're for very little money.

Otherwise, make sure everything is in good working order - plugs, wires, cap, rotor, IAC cleaned out, new air filter(s), etc

Re: Engine Build

Thanks for the insight. I have decided that if I am going to do some work I might as well plan I tuning the ecm while I am at it.
I am looking for a good cam and factory intake combination. I want to keep the engine looking as stock as possible. I already have a set of 22lb injectors for the car. I would like to keep the original heads and go with larger valves and maybe a port and polish depending on cost. I see no reason why that I could not re-use the factory crank unless the mains re shot and have hurt the crank.
I hope to go no bigger than a .030 bore over stock.
