Customer at a loss.....

I have a customer who has a ZZ4 TPI engine running a stock MAF ECU.

Here's his problem.

He runs the car 5 minutes, then it runs like crap 1500 RPM or less. The check engine light goes on.The idle will wander, and it sputters a bit under 1500. If he shuts the engine down, and starts up again, he's good for another 5 minutes until the problem starts again. Runs great for 5 min, then goes to ****.

He gets a MAF code (33).

I have not personally TOUCHED the car. He has a shop working on it.

The shop, is trouble guessing. They replaced:

1. IAC
2. MAF
3. Burnoff relay
4. Put in a heated O2
5. TPS
6. Injectors
7. Tuned it up.

Anyone ever see anything like this? I'm at a loss, and don't want him to buy more unnecessary parts. Better to trouble shoot rather than keep guessing.

Anyone hooked up a scantool to it? Might be able to see something going on in the data stream.

Hello InjectorsPlus!!

Does it do the same thing if the MAF is disconnected??

Check circuit 998 dark green wire going to the MAF from the ECU, this is the MAF signal circuit.

It should go into the "limp home mode" with the MAF disconnected!!

Possibly the ECU is pooched, based on all the replaced parts so far!!!

Don't know, I'm not there, I'll ask him. I don't think his mechanic is that sophisticated.

Hmm....I gave him a heated O2 sensor I had on the shelf. Told him to install it see if it works. It sounds like something that is related to closed loop. A bad ECU would do that...

I'll pass this forward.

I'm at a disadvantage as I never saw the car or mechanic. I met the customer, but not the car.

guessing is never good...a diagnostic tool can do wonders.

I think the mechanic is over his head. I'm going to have him take it to my home shop here. I know my guy will figure it out.

Then I have to drive him home (doing him a favor) and he's an hour away. So I'm trying to avoid that.
