Random stalls, Jumping tacho, spitting petrol etc
Random stalls, Jumping tacho, spitting petrol etc
Hello all!
Was just hoping to get everyones opinion on these symptoms.
This issue is sporadic. I had my mechanic look at my car for 3 days and had 4 mechanics drive it round the block to get the response I got but to no avail. Funnily enough soon as I arrive to pick her up, it happens again. all the mechanics smelt the exhaust and heard the idle, came out of the shop and scratched their heads.
The car would randomly start stalling below 1000rpm, with the tacho having a seizure, jumping up and down (not in time with revs). The exhaust would be spitting out smoke. The only way to keep her going is to power brake.
When she stalls, the power steering cuts out and the brakes are not as responsive.
After three or so attempts to start her back up, she starts perfectly.
They eventually looked at the distributor and saw it was quite corroded. I am going to pick her up tomorrow and fingers crossed thats the problem.
Has anyone had these symptoms before and was this the issue?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated

Sigh... The Distributor got cleared of all the corrosion and drove it home with no problem....
The following day I jumped in the car and all was well until I put the peddle to the floor so that it could kick down a gear hard and low and behold, she stalls...
WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON GUYS...?

could sub out the ECM with another one and see what
happens...
i have had early '90s era GM ecms do that type of stuff
to me and never light the CEL or set a code....
(it was a '91 oldsmobile in my case, another ECM from
a junkyard fixed it)

So it stalls below 1000 rpms and at WOT
Sounds like something with the fuel to me. If it were the spark from the distributor not igniting the fuel then it wouldn't matter how much fuel you gave it.
The tach jumping would happen when the engine is dying.
As for the exhaust spitting out smoke...??? Maybe someone else can jump in and explain that. My best guess would be that you have babied it too much and need to clean out them pipes lol
Good luck
