Need Advice ..Steering pump ?
Hi , I own a 89 GTA 350 . Came back from a 800mile trip and noticed when I was going 70 or more there was a whinning sound coming from the engine bay and a burning smell .I pulled over poped the hood the sound was gone but the burning smell was there . I limped the car home going 50 mph. At 50mph there was no noise or smell .This morning I removed the belt checked the smog pump it was spinning freely as was the AC . Then I checked the steering pump for fluids it was bone dry ( I have no idea how long I have been driving it with out oil) I filled it with oil went for a ride it still whines but no smell . I am not a mecanic need some advice do I change the pump or could it be something else I over looked .
I need to get it fixed so I can go home for the holidays .
Thanks In Advance
Steve

Repair the leak and give it a little time. If it's still whining after a few days it may be time to replace it.

I would say repair the leak, which is probably your hoses, and replace the pump since you obviously ran it dry for some time. Replacing it now would be the more proactive thing to do.

Re: Need Advice ..Steering pump ?
Mitchell shows 2.9 hours for the pump and hoses. I would think a good tech could do the job in 1.5. What you're charged will depend on how reasonable the shop is. The only special tool required is the pulley removal/installation tool. That and perhaps flair wrenches. It is not a high skill job, probably level B.
