1984 camaro z28 quadrajet issues

My 84 z28 has the original carb from since new. The car runs very rich when its cold also the choke does not work. i want to put a a different carb on the car but not sure what kind to put because of the car having a computer. Any ideas on what to do would be very helpfully. Thanks

There are several options you have. We had an 82 with the same carburetor that you have and had the same issue. We pulled it and the intake off and installed a Holley Street Dominator intake and 570 cfm street avenger carb. Instant improvement! No issues what-so-ever out of that setup. We did this as part of a de-smog on the car. If you don't like Holley, you can get an Edlebrock setup as well, or there is a site called Guaranteed Carburetors that you can get a replacement from or have yours rebuilt. They are an excellent company to work with. Their site is http://www.guaranteedcarbs.com

Re: 1984 camaro z28 quadrajet issues

Hello , I had a Holley Pro-Jection 2 barrel 670cfm back oh about 17 or 18 years ago and it ran very smooth and clean especially compared to the original 1980 Z-28 795cfm Quad , although the Quad had alot more in the mid to top end . At the time the Pro-jection cost about $550.00 . Not sure what they are now . I did'nt know any better but I could have added O2 sensor to my set up . It might be something worth checking into . If You're into carbs more I would suggest the Edelbrock as they are very responsive to idle jet adjustments (very easy to tune) and have decent flow characteristics . Good luck

Cheapest, easiest, and best thing to do is to fix the factory Quadrajet.

Re: 1984 camaro z28 quadrajet issues

Yes if camaro18020 knows what he is doing so he can do it himself , but probably not the cheapest route paying someone labor and parts . That Quadrajet most likely has an air horn that looks like a taco when the carb is apart , plus the idle circuits are almost impossible to tune to not be running very rich even with 1/8 holes in throttle plates .....etc believe me I like the power of the Quadrajet ,,,,,,,,no shortage there ,,,,,,but ?

There's a first time for everything. If you don't know what you're doing, you will by the time you've finished the rebuild.

The idea that the idle circuits are impossible or even difficult to tune is complete bunk.

Re: 1984 camaro z28 quadrajet issues

I did just get a rebuild kit for the the carb i am going to rebuild for now. I think in the summer i am going to do some engine work so then i will put a new carb on top the 305. The car did sit in storage for a while before i bought the car and everyday it is running a bit better.
