How can I increase power?

Hey guys, I got a '84 Z28 with the LG4 5.0. So far I put a brand new flowmaster exhaust there and an edelbrock air cleaner. I just put a rebuilt quadrajet carb on there because my old one was junk, so I don't want to buy another carb. What else can I do to give it a little extra power? Thanks guys

Re: How can I increase power?

Do a full tuneup if you haven't already (new plugs, wires, rotor, cap,..etc) also change all the fluids on the car (oil, trans, radiator, brakes, PS,..etc) You'd be amazed many times the performance gains just by making sure it's running right.

Re: How can I increase power?

The car in question came with HEI.

In any case, changing the ignition system won't affect its power output.

Let me re-phrase, its an Accel HEI aftermarket unit and yes it wont Increase power, however it Will make the engine use the power it has more efficiently.

I'd need an explanation why you think it "uses power more efficiently" first.

Stock HEI loses voltage after 4500-5000 RPMs, Accel's/MSD's etc provide voltage to 6500Rpm's therefore allowing the lost power over 4500-5000 RPM's to be extracted by using the high voltage aftermarket HEI units.

Re: How can I increase power?

The original HEI units did, the later ones not so much. More voltage doesn't equate to more power, though. As long as the plug still lights the mix, which isn't difficult in a low-speed, low-compression, low-output engine that makes peak HP at about 4000 RPM.

ok i see your point but your missing mine, i still havent said it INCREASES max HP, i merely said it will utilize the power available after a certain RPM that a stock coil cannot attain.

Btw: OP, sorry for the hi-jack, this is my last post.

Re: How can I increase power?

It's alright guys, thanks for all the responses! When it gets a little warmer I think I might replace all the fluids and get a tune up and what not. Maybe I'll stick in a new cam too. Thanks guys

If the engine's internals are stock it isn't worthwhile to shift after 5000 anyway... heck, my old LG4 ran out of power around 4700-4800
