Just bought an 86 Iroc
Hello,
I just bought an 86 Iroc. On the 100 mile ride home I realized this car has a few issues that need to be worked out. The engine supposedly has been swapped from the original 305 to a TPI 350 out of a vette. The trans is the original 700R4 which feels like it is slipping in between gears. I jumped on it on the highway a little and the shift points are all messed up and I am not sure why. I was under the impression TPI motors shift somewhere between 4500-5500, but this one is not shift at WOT till around 6800RPM. I really don't know why to be honest and was wondering how I could adjust this? I am hoping the "kid" I bought this from hasn't been flooring it ever where he goes. Trans also feels like it grabs good in between gears, but shifts are extremely long and slopy. Is this normal for these cars?

It's not shifting at 6800 RPMs. Your tach is off, which is pretty common.

Yea, I put some more miles on it today... I have had other 350 cars and it doesn't sound like its shifting that high. To make your case, I found the original 85 MPH gauge cluster in the trunk. Any articles on how to calibrate the tachometer or what to do with it?

And one more thing I forgot to mention. Any way to correct the huge shifting lag from gear to gear? It lags in every gear.

There's something here somewhere on tach fixes.
Slow shifts could be as simple as low fluid or as dire as a rebuild. Post up in the trans section with some specifics. There are more experienced guys than me on trans.
