Engine surging, drives me nuts!

My 305 TBI will run fine the first time I start it up. But after the car sits for a little while when I start it back up the engine surges and almost dies. It does this on every consecutive start up unless it sits for a couple hours. It's almost as if its flooded but not dying due to this. When it tries to die I get a loud rattle before the idle comes back up. Driving me crazy, what's up?

I already changed the temp. sensor. My temp. gauge does not work though. It used too. Maybe the switch on drivers side head is bad. I just don't really know. Sure is frustrating though. At one time I pulled my distributor and got it back in 180 off. Rather then re-stab it, I just moved the wires. Think that has anything to do with it.

Sounds like it could possibly be the throttle position sensor or idle control senser

Re: Engine surging, drives me nuts!

this kinda fits into a problem im searching a solution for, For your temp sensor if its not working as in get no reading on the gauge and it sits there, its probably the sensor or gauge, the problem i had to fix was it was reading hot, meaning i had a ground issue, well i bought an aftermarket gauge, installed the new sensor, ran 18 gauge wire to the gauge, it worked perfectly, hooked up the green wire " the sensor and wire are on the the driver side, between the first two plugs on the front of engine. " and the gauges pegged red, followed the green wire, which chases a purple wire which is the 02 sensor, turned out that when i took off the smog pump related stuff IE air tubes, cut them, and pinched shut, a connector broke allowing the protected wrap and wires to melt grounding out, just to be safe chased it back to the cluster with some new 18 gauge wire, now i got two temp gauges, and you can see the inaccuracy of the older 80's gauges

I have the same surging issue you have, I also get a code 32, and 45. I recently over filled on gas and thinking the canister is overfill, as i just replaced my 02 sensor with a wide band "and wide band gauge" . Could be the injectors, but when i checked the spark plugs one was gas covered and the other 7 were normal.

Re: Engine surging, drives me nuts!

Reporting back on my previous thread, My canister is perfectly dry, lines are all good. I cleaned out my TBI, Checked my tps, while it was started, i moved the lever and the engine would spin up, did not take a volt meter to it yet. Im still getting a code 32, and 45. I Replaced the 02 sensor, wide-band is showing rich/opt to lean, like a ping pong ball. I have a have a bad misfire i think, when sitting at idle at a light, you feel like a bang in the motor every few seconds, and can visual see the rpm's drop and feel the power steering fade out in the steering wheel. Ive been busting my ***** trying to figure this out. I Triple checked the egr, i push the diaphragm and it makes the engine bog way down, so that's good, the pathways are clear.

I reset the codes a few times, and these will pop up after a decent drive, normaly they dont pop up right away.

I had a issue where the motor would surge at idle from 700rpms down to 100 and back up. I cleaned the TBI, spark plugs, fixed a cracked emissions that was in a big wire bung on the passenger side firewall going to.. cant recall right behind the TBi i believe.

The injectors are fueling in a nice cone pattern.

Any idea's fire away, thanks
