Honest opinion is find a Honda or Toyota with some miles till you get out of school. Not every repair on a car can be done in one evening and your going to tear your hair out rushing through fixing it up.
There are three things people want thier cars to be: fast, reliable, and cheap - but truth is you can only have two.

plugs, wires, cap, rotor, new fluids, radiator flush. Then hit the pieces that need attention. Cheap shocks and struts can run $100+. A rebuilt front end can run $300, if you need strut mounts (and you probably do). ; Rebuild the carb for around $30-50, what's wrong with it anyway?

and a new distributor and means of locking the converter? all of it's computer controlled and won't work without the whole.
Why not fix what you have? You won't gain any power or mileage swapping that stuff out. It will only lighten your wallet.

You've already spent $1000 with exhaust, carb, intake, dist, torque converter lockup, TV geomtery corrector, etc.
And you better check local emissions laws - you cannot just slap an aftermarket carb on in most states/locals.
You'll never see 300hp out of a 305 - it's just not time/cash/trouble justified.
Get the 305 to run well, spend the remainder on school. After you get a job, and more cash saved, then you can do a 350 swap or LSx.

Re: advice on 85 camaro with 305
some hooker 2055's and a 3" catback made a NIGHT AND DAY difference on my buddies 85 LG4.
I'd leave the factory induction system in place, and fix up the suspension so you can enjoy driving it.
if you just have to have vortec heads, they (now) make a spreadbore RPM intake for vortecs.
I wish I'd kept my CCC setup years ago. My buddy, who I tried to talk him out of, now wishes the same.
Don't do it!

Yes. It just needs to accept a spreadbore carburetor.
