I recently purchased an 87 305 without an intake. Is there a quick way to tell if it is carbureated or TPI.... Also I put a stock 305 intake on it as I assume that is what it was... with a quadrajet and I can get it started but runs really rough and will not idle unless I turn the Idle screw all the way up then idles at about 3000 rpm... It floods out at first then clears up but still will not idle... There was old gas in it I have recently replaced as it would not stay running at all before with the BROWN gas. The gas is still a little darker than normal as I was unable to get all of it out... Any suggestions on what I may try to get it idling right would be appreciated...

 

If it was a TPI car, the fuel pressure would be way way too high for a carb. If you thought the motor was original to the car, the 8th digit of the VIN would tell you what induction system. F = TPI, H = carb

 

Is there a mechanical fuel pump on the passenger side of the block?
