car wont start

tried to start my car up after seating for about a week. when i turned the key only thing i heard was a click. I though it was low in gas because the gas gauge dont work so i went to the gas station i got 3 gallon in a gas jug . Put most of it n the tank and a little drop n the carb still wont start still madeing the click sound when i turn the key. so i took the battery up to autozone to get the battery tested they said the battery was low and that i might have let a light or something on or the Alternator might not be eveing out enought amp for the battery. So the cahrged up the battery for a hour .but it back in and it did the same thing. what could it be

Re: car wont start

An hour on the charger might not be enough - might need to charge longer - depends on what amps your charging at - at 10 amps a battery could need 2-3 hours on a charger or more.

Did they test the battery, or just check the voltage? A battery test takes about 20 minutes - if they didn't test it, then have it tested.

Try connecting the battery up as usual, then run a heavy guage wire from battery pos post to the starter where the purple wire attaches - with key on, if the car starts, then check the starter troubleshooting guide here: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=2

Re: car wont start

The click is your starter solenoid. From your description, I would say you have a faulty starter or poor connection between the battery and either the engine block or the starter solenoid. The click is your solenoid relay closing, which should be sending power to the starter motor so that it turns the engine.

The starter motor not running when the solenoid clicks generally means the starter motor or solenoid is bad. Check the connections at the battery carefully for corrosion or damage. Check the cables to the starter and the engine block for damage. Check cable connections at the engine block and at the starter. If all connections look good and are tight, remove the starter and take in for testing.

Yes the starter drive can stick and lock the motor. Check your oil. Be sure it's not a seized motor.
