Car died, lost all power and negative battery cable is gone

I was sitting at a stoplight and i lost all power and the car completely died.

I go to the engine bay, and on the battery there is no negative cable at all. I don't see it loose in the engine bay at all. It still has the negative cable on the side of the battery but the top one is completely missing.

Where does the negative cable come from? I haven't had the car for long and never really looked at it. It's just a near stock carb'd 305.

One wire comes from the starter, the other comes from under the alternator on the bracket.
Positive (red) goes to starter.

I never knew exactly the way side post / top post batteries worked but a friend explained it to me.

So now I'm simply at a stage of having no freaking idea why I have no power or anything. No click when I try to start, no lights at all. Absolutely nothing

Make sure both your battery cables are tight at each end my positive cable has come loose a time or two at the starter also could be the fusible link.
