Swapin out my camel humps. For what???
79 350 (from z28)
Flat top piston's
Comp cam 284 adv dur 481 lift
Edelbrock performer air gap intake
750 q-jet
Headers (not sure what kind) shorties
Dual exhaust (not true) 2.5"
Not sure on gear ratios but it is posi.
So my question is what's the cheapest heads I can get that will be a step up from the camel humps? Or should I just keep the humps? Everyone always says change them but Will I still be able to use pump gas? Are they really hurting my performance that much?
Thanks for any advice!!!!!!!!!

Re: Swapin out my camel humps. For what???
40 years ago, camel heads were a good performance option. Heads have come a long way since then and better aftermarket options are now very affordable.
If the camel heads are untouched, a racer who needs date specific castings may want them. Someone building a period correct car needing castings from that era may want them. For modern day performance, camel heads are a step backwards.

Thanks again. Is there a guess on how much HP could be gained with modern heads?

That's really hard to say with your combo however I have seen on my old car, it had 186 or 187 camel backs,zz9 cam 1.6 rockers she ran 13.3 then I purchased a pair of AFR 190(1992) car went directly to 12.4....... safe to say the heads bottled up a good bit of performance this car was all with a holley750 3310-2

Theres all kinds of heads out there, you just have to be a craigslist junkie and be ready to drive far to get them. I found my Dart Iron Eagle 180cc heads 4 hours from my house for only $500 new.

Not related directly to your head question, but what exactly do you mean by that? Does all of the exhaust have to go through a single 2.5" pipe at any point? If so, new heads aren't going to help much.
Vortec heads require a new intake manifold, need self-aligning rocker arms, and without modification are limited to about .45" valve lift. That doesn't make them a no-go, but be aware.
If you didn't have a q-jet, I'd say get this kit - http://sdparts.com/details/scoggin-d...ter/sd8060arpm
This one would allow you to keep your q-jet, but wouldn't support the power in the upper RPMs - http://sdparts.com/details/scoggin-d...ter/sd8060akit

Re: Swapin out my camel humps. For what???
Well...my headers both run to one pipe then to the muffler and then branch off into dual exhaust. I think the main pipe might actually be 3"...not sure though. Thanks for the links I'll check em out.
I had another question....I have a stock torque converter...is that acceptable for a performance package? Or should I change it?

Also....just asking..if I already have the edelbrock performer intake, why do I need a different intake in order to use the vortec heads?? In the link I checked out it paired up the two.
