before i start
My trans am has not been running for about 1 year and before I start restoring it, I want to make sure the engine block is not cracked or there is anything major wrong with it, but I'm not sure what to check or how to check. Any tips on things to check? Any ideas appreciated

many cracks/issues can't be seen - if you think there is a reason for it to have a crack in the heads or the block, then you need to have it checked at a machine shop.

Check that the fluids are full (and stay that way if you have to fill them), the gas is fresh, the battery is charged, and the key turns.
Think of it this way: let's assume you "check" "everything", and you find .... "something". What will you do differently?
Exactly. Your next post will be something like, the block is broken in half, can I run it anyway? and the answer will be, try it and see. Whaddya got to lose?
Either it's cracked or it's not. All the "checking" in the world won't change that. Either it'll work or it won't. Go find out.
