This one might be long, but please bear with me haha. Alright, so i have been having starting problems on my 91 rs for about a week after i tried to switch starters.. Before I switched starters, I would try to start my car, it would start turning over, then the engine would just stop and the starter would only be whining. I switched the starters only to find that the old one was still good and I had a different problem.. I put the old starter back and I get no noise at all when I start it. Thinking I messed up putting the starter back in, i redid it. I'm positive that I put the starter on right though.. After cranking it over and over again, I got it to start. For some reason, I was at the gas station (parked on a slight uphill slope) I tried to start it and no noise again. I moved the gearshift to neutral and back to park in hope that i could start it. I had it in park and was still moving backwards.. Luckily after messing with the ignition and gearshift, I got it to start. Now it's parked in my driveway, and it's doing the same thing, rolling forward in park, no noise, but still have all electrical. I've been dicking around in it for about 45 minutes and still nothing.. I am stumped and need help! School starts up again on monday so hopefully I get it to run again before then.

Is the starter turning and car not running, or does the starter not turn at all?

Also, car will not roll in park - even on the steepest incline with an automatic -there are physical metal geared brake inside the tranny that will not allow the driveshaft to turn if car is in park all the way. Maybe your shifter cable is shot, or something wrong with your shifter thus it's not going fully into park, and thus the neutral safety switch is not allowing the signal wire to starter to get 12v+.

 

When I turn the key, I hear no noises at all. I took the starter to auto-zone, tested it, and it passed. When I have the car in "park" it still rolls down my driveway like it's in neutral. The strange thing is that this started happening in 1 day after I tried to change the starter. Nothing like that happened before I changed the starter. The only thing that concerned me was the engine cutting out and starter whining when I turned the key.

 

i had this problem a long time ago, i would park my car, put it in park but couldn't get my key out. i had to leave it in the ignition a few times until i realize it wasn't fully in the park positon. my buddy messed with the linkage for the tranny and we thought that fixed it. a few days later it did it again. i gave up trying to fix it then i changed my shifter and it never happen again. I think you should check the shifter, and button on the shifter, and have someone change through the gears while your underneath looking at the linkage. just make sure you put stops in front of your wheels.

 

Put in new starter, took it to autozone and it failed the test. Still didn't start so I put in push to start button, and started right up like a champ. Thanks for the help guys.
