I need to replace my starter solenoid on my 92 RS. Often when I go to turn the key all I get is a click click for a while. I believe this problem was caused by a short which has already been addressed. Im not sure but wouldn't I have to jack the car up and take off some skid plates around the front right side wheel to get to the solenoid? What's tools will I need and how should I go about doing this? Thanks

 

You have to remove the starter to get to the solenoid.

 

No one replaces solenoids anymore, just replace the entire starter.

BUT - get under there and use a 10gauge wire, touch it to the starter terminal where the purple wire connects, and have a helper touch the battery pos post with key on - does starter turn every time you do this? If so, probably not a starter or solenoid issue.

Usually a "click click click click" is a failing battery - have it tested first (easy and free). If you just get a single click then nothing when you turn the key, then try my test before you go changing starters

 

It doesn't do it every time, but just about. It may just be a coincidence, but it seems to do it more when im low on gas. Im sure tho that that is just a coincidence because I cannot think of any reason why gas would affect the starter... but what you're saying is that im probably going to have to replace the entire starter? Someone else told me that but I really didn't trust their judgement

 

Do you have the stock side terminals on your battery? This could be the problem, on my 89 it would click like hell because the side terminals on the battery didn't have good enough connection no matter how tight they were. Be sure to get a good top post connectors even if your starter is going bad and it will charge better.

 

No they're not stock, everything with wires or electricity in this car is rigged up bad, and just plain wrong. Ill look into it thanks

 

Since the starter has to come down I would replace it all as a unit.........
