engine backfire
Ok guys I need your help. A few weeks ago, we installed pacesetter headers on my sons 91 coupe.. thats another story.. Well the issue we have is now only at certian times, when the car is around 200 degrees, the car backfires through the exhaust when you accellerates, stumbles, chugs and then shuts itself off! Yikes... Cant seem to figure out why.. it did it to me today while driving. Only mod is headers, car has no EGR valve or smog equipment. I pulled the plugs, they look clean. Injectors are about 6 months old, cap, rotor, wires, coil, all other sensors have been replaced within the last 6 months.. ideas?? I dont need him driving it and cutting off. Its a 5 speed if that makes any difference.

Re: engine backfire
Did you check the firing order?
Did you check the firing order again?
Replaced wires - maybe got a bad one - new doesn't always mean good.

Car does not always backfire, only on occasion, if the firing order was wrong shouldnt it backfire all the time?

Re: engine backfire
Ok checked firing order and all is well with that. I changed computers, same problem with the backfire. I changed cap and rotor and same backfire problem. I wonder if the heat from the headers is wreaking havoc on something. ????

Re: engine backfire
Maybe a bad ignition module? Inside dist under rotor, when mine went bad it would act up when car was warm. Ignition module is electronic, hates heat. It comes with dielectric grease, make sure to use it per instructions.

Re: engine backfire
I just replaced that and it has the same issue, to compound my issue now we have a blown header gasket causing it to run really crappy. I need to get that fixed first. The paper gaskets with the pace setter headers are junk but I cant seem to find anyone with the fel pro ones in stock
