Ok guys and girls, after much thinking and talking to people and searching on here I have decided against buying a rebuilt or reman engine. I'm going to build my own. Now I have a 350 block, it has been bored .020 over and dipped and new freeze plugs and cam bearings. What I would like advice on is what type of rotating assembly kit i should buy. Like do I need a forged crank or is cast fine, or forged pistions or is hypereutectic ok?
I really dont understand some of this stuff so hopefully you guys can help.

The engine will have patriot 185cc vortec style heads. a lt4 hot cam and either ported tpi or a stealth ram. It is a 5 speed with 3:42 gears (G92) It will be driven daily and probably never see a race track. I'm just looking for something to haul a$$ in around these north carolina mnts. I need the advice on the rotating assembly because I dont have the crank, or any of the internals except the roller lifters. I thought about buying a used 350 and rebuilding it but I want my engine to pretty much be brand new and I want the experience of building my own. So what should I buy guys?

you should be fine with a cast crank but if your buying all new a eagle cast steel or scat cast are cheap. if you dont plan on N02 or forced induction later hypereutectic will be fine just dont use it for long runs over 6500 RPM. as for rods stock with new bolts should also be fine.

 

OK. I was looking at the balanced rotating assembly's on summit and there are only a few for a 350 .020 over and they all say "external" balance. I thought all 86 and up sbc 350 were "internally" balanced? Or are they considering the weight on the flex plate as external? And no I don't plan to no2 as this will just be a street car. But I have played with the idea of a SC later on down the road(way down the road ) But for now I just want a good motor for my dd thats go some a$$
But there are 4 kits on summit. 3 have cast cranks and hypere. pistons but one is inverted dome pistons. So I assume the 2 with the flat pistons are the way to go? And whats the differences between the 2 or 4 valve relief on the piston?

 

they are considered external for the weight on the flywheel. Depending on the heads you plan to run the flat tops would be the way to go for compression. Pistons with 2 valve reliefs need to be installed with the reliefs towards the lifter valley and they will give you slightly more compression the the 4 valve relief pistions and it dosent matter witch way you install them.

 

ok. thanks for all the help. I know some of my questions are noob questions. but I have done cam swaps head and intake swaps, pulled and installed engines. But i have never completely rebuild an engine. I just want to make sure I do it right the 1st time because if I make a mistake that costs me an engine i'm up $**** creek. I wont have the money to try agian for a long time lol

Yeah I have read that, as well as others. I used that little search function. But it was still a little confusing because they was calling it external. But I re-read sofa's post and it all made since. It's still internally balanced but they had to move the counter weight to the flex plate due to the 1 piece rear seal so people keep calling it externally balanced. Am I right? Sofa's post should be made a sticky. It clears up a lot of confusion about how sbc's are balanced
