Take the torx screws out of the center counsel thats holding the plastic of the center counsel in. It'll have four screws by the shifter and four by the ashtray. Carefully pull it out. See if the spring is still intact, making the button go back up. Im defiantly not the most knowledgeable on this site but hopefully that helps. Sounds like that could be the problem.

Thank you very much, sounds like you might be right, I'll check this weekend.
Will I have to remove the shifter **** to take off the console sections you talked about.

Any idea on a part number in case the spring is missing ?

Re: shifter button on 82 TA

You dont have to but it'll be hard if its still there, pull off the shifter button cap it'll come off fairly easy, youll see another black push button, turn that either way, be careful thou it has a spring in it so it might shoot out, pull everything out the push button the lock and the spring, then remove the clip on the front side of the shifter ( towards the radio), then pull the shifter **** straight up.

As far as the spring goes I dont have the part number for that, but you should be able to just go to a hardware store for a new spring, its nothing special besides a normal spring.
