Advice on high mileage engine
Advice on high mileage engine
Hi,
I have a 305 LG4 with approx 262k on the clock. It's currently working okay but I would like to get some advice on where I can start to freshen up the engine.
I can see some smoke when I start up the engine if it has been sitting a while. Also, the exhausts smell really bad.
Modifications done is that the cat has been replaced with a straight pipe, the air system is removed and the ac and compressor are also removed.
Does any of you have any ideas on where to start. I may do a complete rebuild at a later date, but on the other hand I just might swap the entire engine...

change the oil, try some higher mileage oil. Run a bottle of Lucas fuel system cleaner through. Check for codes. Inspect a few plugs for wear, inspect wires, cap, rotor. Check timing.

Smoke on initial startup is normal for most 20 year old thirdgens. That is just the valve seals. Will not affect power.
Re: Advice on high mileage engine
Okay, thanks for the tips. I have actually already made the standard service with new oil and filter, new plugs, new plug wires, new cap and anew rotor. Since the smoke that I'm seeing is because of the valve seals. Would there be any point in replacing those? Is that a complicated job? I would guess that it would require me to remove the heads, correct?
So after this, what would you guys say is the next step? Should I perhaps focus on replacing the piston rings or should I look elsewhere?

Why don't you just consider replacing the block sometime down the road.Any sbc block will work from 1992 down.

Have you ran any fuel system cleaner through it yet? I would not worry about the valve seals right now.
