Fuel Gauge

I didn't know where to post this so I put it here.

It seems like a lot of 3rd gens have gauges that don't work. So What is the most likely reason for a fuel gauge to not work?('89 RS)

Re: Fuel Gauge

the gauge in my '87 is operated by a float in the gas tank. it could be related to the float malfunctioning, it could just be that the gauge is sprung. i wouldnt know for sure im just brainstorming.

in any case, it wouldnt be fun to have to drop the gas tank to find out or do repairs, IMO, ive read that they can be a bear to remove.

Re: Fuel Gauge

Your tank holds 15 gallons. You shloud have a decent idea what your mileage per mile - so use your trip meter to make sure you never go empty (resetting to zero when filling up). When your fuel pump dies (which it will someday in the next few years), then drop the tank and fix both issues at once. Because chances are, it's a sender issue in the tank. And although it's not a hard job, it's a PITA to drop, and it takes a full day by yourself.

I have had the Idea to put a 10gal reserve tank or two in the back for when gas prices are down or in case I run out. But thats more expensive than a sender hanger assembly at O'Reillys with a employees discount

I work at a auto service shop with 3 other people, 2 different lifts, 4 snap-on tool boxes, etc, etc.
could I get it done in 5 hours at that shop?

Re: Fuel Gauge

Mine kind of works. When I pulled it to install a fabbed pickup and see if I could fix the sending unit, there was corrosion on the wires/bands that control the signal in regards to how much fuel is left and resistance. It's in those areas that my gauge acts goofy- shakes all over, or 'dies' in that area.

I second the advice above. It will happen- just wait, and know your mpg. Do it all in one shot. It's a royal PITA by yourself.

Oh, with a shop and lift, yeah. A day is alone in your driveway with a jack and stands.

Exhaust has to come out - so plan on being able to reattach it from the cat back.

In Missouri, '96 and older cars don't need to pass emissions, so.... straight-pipe.
