Hey guys, I was thinking of adding an aftermarket air cleaner to my 88 camaro convertable.
It has a 305 tbi engine.
Would adding one like this work?

I like the look and just want to make sure it won't throw codes if I go with it.

Yes - but you may need a 1/2 spacer between TBI unit and carb so that the base clears the linkage. Might also have to use a 2in filter instead of a 3in filter to get hood clearance. That's why I never buy sets - they always come with something I can't use yet I have to pay for. Can you get the base and lid without the filter?

You'll also need a straight piece of 1/4-20 threaded rod (stock TBI rod is bent), and you need to make sure you connect the IAT sensor in the base, and make sure you cap off the vacuum line to the heat riser door flap.

Basically, it won't throw codes though right?
Also, will it add to the performance of the car? I really just want Mental horsepower anyway.

 

Won't add anything that you'll notice, and no it won't throw any codes as long as that IAT sensor is put in the new base (or mounted close to the base). Look for a metal 1/2" spacer - I had Mr. Gasket plastic crapola and the heat breaks them the first week.

 

im thinking of doing the same thing to my 92, it also has a 305 tbi and i wanted to put an after market air cleaner like that, since its been almost a year now how were you able to get it on did you just have to get the spacer and the new rod?

I haven't been on in a long while.. Short answer. No I did not buy it.
But I am thinking of some other options for a wee bit of power.
Probablly a cam and headers. Just need to get out and do it.
I only drive the car a couple of times a year, but you know.
