Starter advice

So, my issue is, I have a original v6 camaro; However the previous owners put a v8 in the car. The starter they had in it was working until when swapping engines I broke it putting in the new engine.

Question: What is a starter that will be compatible with v6 flywheel,
but will mount to a v8 block?

I understand that the transmission needs to be changed, This is until I can afford a different tranny.

The car is: 87 berlinetta camaro originally v6 tpi // unsure if it was the 2.8 or 3.2.

Fairly certain its 168 tooth.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, been searching forever for a starter that fits and works.

Re: Starter advice

If you still have the old starter just use the gm part number off it too get a new one. I think pretty much any chev v8 will bolt on just make sure they have the same mounting patern

Re: Starter advice

If you NOW have a 168 tooth flywheel, you'll need a starter for that - NOT A CAMARO STARTER .... none of the 3rd gen's had a 168 tooth flywheel, they were ALL 153 tooth - so you cannot just ask for a 82-92 Camaro starter.

Why not do it right, and get a mini-torque universal starter that will clear future headers and bolt up to either flywheel. They aren't that much more (I paid $90 shipped for mine).

Re: Starter advice

That's a good idea considering I AM running headers. Where did you get yours from? Jegs? And it works for 153/168 tooth flywheels? I talked with a guy at Napa and he said he may be able to bring in a starter for a total of 126.95. So if I could go for that, would be cheaper, smaller, and compatible either way.

Thanks for the great advice, if you could turn me on to what site you got yours that would be awesome!

Re: Starter advice

I actually got mine off ebay of all places, this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SBC-B...Q5fAccessories

Just search "sbc starter" - they are much cheaper than store-bought - even the fancy chromed jobs are $80! Mine's been on the car for just over a year, no problems at all, I love it!

Doesn't matter what other cars the starter might fit.

My point was, if you specify a starter for a 1982 - 1992 Camaro (or any starter that fits that application), you will get a starter for a 153 tooth flywheel (since all 1982 - 1992 F-bodies came factory with a 153 tooth flywheel). OP stated he thought he had a 168 tooth flywheel - so a 3rd gen F-body starter will not fit the 168 tooth flywheel that he thinks he has.

So, if the starter you have linked above is for a 153 tooth flywheel, and he has a 168 tooth flywheel, it won't work.

If you read the post he is using the v6 tranny and flywheel. v6's didn't use a 168t flywheel far as i know. the starter number I gave him should work

Re: Starter advice

Thanks for the links and advice, Bronk, I've had bad luck so far with a staggard design. The one I used that was staggard was a v6 starter so that might of been why. The car was originally a v6 but who knows what the previous owners did. I checked the starter that worked before, it didn't have a number, may have been worn off or painted over.

I have another question, I know I should drop a new thread. I need a new tube from master to slave cylinder for the clutch. So far no luck in finding one that works right, anyone have ideas? I was going to try tubing that holds the chemicals for an ice maker, but it doesn't hold pressure. Any ideas?

Re: Starter advice

If you don't have a number just check that the noses are the same. it should work but be prepared to add starter shims to get the proper drive to ringgear spacing (most of the time the shims get lost or just left out).

Newb is right about the different starters needed for different ring gears so you might want to actually want to buy some beer and get a bud over to turn the engine over and count the teeth to know what you have there for sure(2 man job)

as for the tube ....don't cheap out on this. get the right part.

Good luck
