what is this part? its smoking out of it

when at idle, it starts smoking around the threaded part i believe its hard to tell. once noticeable when the hood is open, yet at higher rpms, it stops. any ideas?

check valve for the air injection system. The system pumps air in the exhaust to speed up O2 sensor warm up in open loop, once in closed loop it switches to pump air to the cat con for oxidation.

Those check valves prevent exhaust gas from going back up the lines. The threads may be damaged or it needs to be tightened down.

Incorrect - it has a point and should not make the car run rough.

Re: what is this part? its smoking out of it

it it leaks exhaust gas out, it will pull oxygen in and confuse the O2 sensor on that side (dr. side) so it can make the car run rough.

yeah, it idles rough when its cold, also on cold starts at idle, as its smoking from there u can hear, sounds like a mini back fire coming from that same location on the hood. its probably just super clogged up

Re: what is this part? its smoking out of it

If that's smoking and making noise, your cat or muffler is clogged. Could be, the muffler is clogged with the remains of the cat.

The check valves do fail. If it allows exhaust past the valve it will soon eat through the rubber hose that attaches to it.

Re: what is this part? its smoking out of it

is there any harm to the engine that can be done by disconecting the section from the check valve to the manifold for ease of spark plug removal, leaving the AIR system open as long as the manifold holes are pluged?
