It shut off and won't start!
It shut off and won't start!
I recently purchased an 84 z28 305 w/ 4b. The car needed a full front brake job when I bought it but would crank and run. When I got the brakes fixed and drove it home I stopped by a store and it shut off. I can turn the key the lights on dash work but the starter won't turn over. No clicking of the selenoid, no nothing. Should I pull the starter and have it checked or is this an ignition switch problem? a little help would be greatly appreciated!
Re: It shut off and won't start!
For the thirty minutes I drove it before I got to the store it ran great! It has a new intake and a supercharged ignition system on top of the distributor cap. The previous owner did some mods but unsure as to what all was done. It appears they have put a 95 suspension on the front end to give better handling. But I don't think any of that has anything to do with this problem btw the battery is good. Slightly over 13 amps.

Test the starter - on the starter there will be the pos battery cable plus a bunch of other wires on one terminal (usually the larger one), and a purple wire all by itself on another terminal (usually smaller one). Take a 10 guage wire, touch the terminal with the purple wire while holding on the pos side of battery - if starter turns, it's not a starter issue.
If not the starter, then follow this guide (skip the VATS stuff since you don't have it): http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=38

Thx I tested the starter and that is not the problem. So on to the next set of possibilities. I hafta go to work in a few so will update as to how it is going tomorrow. Hopefully the diagram will help seems fairly simple once u read up on it.

One more quikl question is it common for the flywheel to be exposed on this model? I understand some has to be exposed for the starter to engage but have never seen one fully exposed. Just wondering

Should be a plastic cover over it. It's called a dust shield - not really a requirement as it really doesn't do much.
Often I've found issues at the neutral safety switch - if it's an automatic, the NSS is attached to the gear shifter in the console, if a manual it's above the clutch pedal.
Other issure could be ignition switch (not the key cylinder, but the actual switch). It's a PITA to get to - it's on top of the column under the gauge cluster - remove underdash panel, remove two nuts holding underdash panel bracket, remove two nuts holding up steering colum, allow column to drop down (all the wiring will kinda hold it hanging there).

Assuming you mean that it shut down by itself, I would look at the ignition switch. Check for power to the red wires at the switch connector. If no power, check the fuse links at the starter.
