Help with 305
Hey guys I just joined this sight and need some help. I have a 1986 firebird wanted to do a 350 but got shafted and now have a new 96 98 305 vortech any way I've decided to build it for now I want to do cam 1.6 roller rockers and bee springs don't really know what there called just been reading about them. I have a 700r4 trans built and 3000 stall converter and the rear is 4.11 gears. I want as much power as I can without bore stroke. I'm going carb so need to know what cfm to go for and I would like to use the carb I buy to go on my 350 when I go that route next year . I have msd 6al and the msd street fighter msd wires edelbrock headers and I would love to know what u guys think I can get out if all this . I do t car about gas milage

"going carb" and "caring about mpg's" aren't really compatible. was your car origanally carbed? the cc q-jet would be your best friend for fuel economy. for aftermarket carbs, a vacuum secondary would give you better fuel economy than a mechanical secondary, but less performance.
600cfm is all a 305 needs. 650cfm is all a 350 would need. ive had friends that ended up buying 2 carbs because there first one was too big.
the vortec heads are a plus. i dont know about the valve springs your refering to, but alot of after market springs require the heads to be machined slightly. search around and find out what cam would work best with your gearing and fuel delivery set up

Re: Help with 305
he is referring to beehive shaped springs, honestly you have other things to worry about. Like purchasing an intake manifold for vortec heads. They are 300 plus new, and used ones arent abundant.
edelbrock performer intake manifold and a quadrajet, or holley 600 is what you want.
after you get that together youll start driving it and figure out really quick that the 4:11 drive gear isnt a good match for your 700r4. a better gear ratio for the 700r4 is 3:42.
once you do those things you will have a running car, and you can call a cam company and have a cam selected for your stall. enjoy
