1985 Trans am TPI misfiring and studdering

I own a 85 trans am 305 TPI, the car is completely stock with the exception of a catback.

Since I bought the car, It has always studdered when it is cold and goes away as soon as it warms up.

However a misfiring issue has started to occur that has me confused.

I simply got in the car one day and started it up and it had a dead miss, so then I let the car sit for awhile. The battery went dead, I charged it up and started it and the Misfire was gone. ( the studder was still there).

So I drove the car for about 3 weeks every day, then all of a sudden I took it out again and felt something was off and by the time i got home it had a dead misfire in it again. The CEL comes on sometimes when it is started and sometimes it doesn't come on. (Regardless if the car is misfiring or not). I just took the battery cable off the car for 30 minutes and put it back on to see if it would fix the problem, but it did not. So I am very confused by this, I can only think that it has to be a sensor of some sort.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me as my other car took a crap on me. Thanks!

Re: 1985 Trans am TPI misfiring and studdering

You should be able to use a paperclip to see the codes flash via your CEL.
1. Make sure the key is off
2. Insert hi tech trouble code checker( paper clip bent into a u shape) in A and B. Now let's make sure you are in A and B. If you are looking at the ALDL, A and B are on the top row on the far right. Make sure the paper clip is touching the contacts.
3. Turn the key on/run but don't start the car and leave it there.
4. SES should start flashing. It will flash code 12, 3 times, then start giving you the trouble codes.

Now earlier tpi cars may have used pins A and E vs pins A and B on the GM ALDL port(ALDL is the small black box under drivers side dash beside fuse box) It has 12 holes(pins).

You only need to disconnect battery cable for like 30 seconds not 30 min.

Start it up at night and look for blue flashes from your wires (arcs), sound like you have a bad ignition part somewhere. Inspect your dist. cap
