Intake manifold 90 Camaro
Intake manifold 90 Camaro
Hi guys. Had to remove my intake manifold when one of the thermostat housings bolts seized and broke off in the manifold. Tried a couple of suggestions from mechanic friend (heat, bolt extractor, PB, etc) to remove the bolt, but ended up having to remove the manifold, and take it to a machine shop to have the bolt removed.
Now I need to replace the manifold, and don't want to muck it up. Did a search here, and read where someone suggested to silicone both sides of the intake gaskets all around both intake and coolant ports. Permatex Ultra Black Sensor Safe silicone was suggested. I ran that by the parts guy at OReilly's, and he said I shouldn't put any silicone on the gasket. Also asked mechanic friend about torque sequence, and I seem to get conflicting info, so just wanted to run it by the experts here before I proceed.
Going to go ahead and buy one of the manuals they have at O'Reillys, hopefully there's some good info there.
So, I'm thinking permatex stuff on both sides of the gasket, and a bead of RTV on front and back. None on o-ring gasket for distributor. Torque pounds in sequence of 10, 20, 30 then to final torque of 35. Don't know about sequence, but it was suggested that I start in the middle and work my way out.
It was also suggested that I put some silicone on the bolts for the intake manifold.(?)
Would appreciate hearing your suggestions.
Thanks, and have a great memorial day weekend!

Re: Intake manifold 90 Camaro
Your manuel you got at orielly's should have the proper torque sequence. It's different for '86 and earlier than it is for '87 and later I believe so look for that.
I always use a little bit of weather strip adhesive to secure each gasket to the respective head. Then, use RTV on the china walls (not the cork strips) and I usually continue the bead of RTV about 3/8 to 1/2 inch on each corner. I usually use pipe thread sealant on the intake bolts by the water jackets (the corners) just cause.
Otherwise, like you said, torque in sequence, in increments like you stated.

Re: Intake manifold 90 Camaro
tnt gots it down good. I agree.
in a perfect world you wouldnt need to run atv silicone around the water jackets. on a fresh new set of heads and new intake i wouldnt either. but when they have pits in them then you deffinately do. but only around the water jackets. which are at the ends of the heads. I think max. torque on the bolts is 25 ft lbs...but may be mistaken. I also use a liquid thread sealant on the intake bolts. I use it on all of them
