Using a key without a chip?
Using a key without a chip?
Hi, everyone! I couldn't find anywhere else to post this:
I have a 1990 RS with a carbureted 350. I have a %100 chance of loosing my keys sometime in the near future. If I got a key made without a chip shouldn't it work without the ECM? Just wanted to know before I pay $100 for another key.
Thanks!

As long as VATS is completely removed or bypassed, the non VATS key will work.

You can supply a ground source to the starter enable relay (the black with yellow stripe wire) and that will eneable use of a regular cut key.
Or, you can go get a spare made at any ACE Hardware store for $25 (probably True Value as well).
Also, you can get VATS blanks on ebay - just have to know what resistor is in your key (measure pellet with a digital ohm meter). Then have any key cutter cut the blank to match your key.
And, you can carry a 3ft chunk of 10 gauge wire with you, and a spare regular key - insert key and turn to run, then jump the starter (purple wire terminal) off the battery positive.

The chart pic should be revised with is chart soon to include Digikey.com resistors. Not the only place to buy them, but is a good source instead of searching.
