Re: Anyone know what this engine code is?
The casting number is alot easier to use than those stamping codes.
Post that, instead of that other thing, and some one of us can almost certainly tell you what bore size it is.

Ok I thought that's what that # was. Any idea where I can find the casting #? Thanks

Re: Anyone know what this engine code is?
Hello. The code I found says what looks like GM 5.7LG then underneath that it says SGI. would I be right in assuming that that means this is in fact a 350? Does this code also indicate the year of manufacture?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Anyone know what this engine code is?
The 5.7LG is not the casting number. It does however indicate that it's probably a 350 BLOCK. Doesn't tell much more than that about THE MOTOR.
No the date of mfr is not included in what you posted.
This is a casting number. Note how just to the right of the circled number, there's a llittle raised pad about ¼" tall and 1" long; that will have about 4 letters & numbers cast into it. That's the date code.

Date codes don't tell the decade, so if it has a "3" for example, it could mean 73, 83, or 93. However most casting #s weren't produced for that long, so almost always you can tell the actual production date by the combo of casting # and date code.
A 4" bore block could have been "rebuilt" into a 302, 327, 350, or 383. The casting number won't tell you that. Similarly, a block with the stamping code for a 160 HP 74 Impala 350 2-barrel could have been "rebuilt" into a 600 HP racing piece. The code won't tell you that either. All it tells you, AT BEST, is what the motor LEFT THE FACTORY as. The act of rebuilding an engine changes EVERY SINGLE PART that would have been specified by the code. Those stamping codes are therefore worthless once you no longer know FOR SURE that the motor is associated with its original car. Since, to the contrary, you know FOR SURE that the motor IS NOT associated with its original car, it tells you NOTHING about what it is NOW.

Doesn't matter. There's nothing more the date and casting number could tell you that's any use to you.

Re: Anyone know what this engine code is?
That's not strictly true... they could tell him if it's a roller-compatible block, for example.

Re: Anyone know what this engine code is?
From the presence of 5.7LG it's already known to be a 1 piece RMS so it's cast with roller provisions, but even the date code won't give a definitive indication of whether it's been machined for it.
