checking my timing...procedure question?

85' Z28, 305ci carb....the tune up sticker under the hood recommends TDC setting at idle, but also says to unplug a wire before checking the timing. my Haynes manual says Don't unplug wires....

does anyone know which is correct, and are we talking about the four wires coming out of distributor, or another wire? thanks! Rick

I ALWAYS go buy whats under the hood. Haynes and chiltons have both been wrong at times for me. especially in ignition and electrical stuff.

Re: checking my timing...procedure question?

I realize this thread has been ended for a little while now, but I have a question pertaining to this and I didn't want to start a new thread if I didn't have to. I am going to be replacing my distributor cap and rotor, along with wires and plugs tomorrow, and I was wondering what I needed to unplug before I set my timing? My car is an 83 2.8 carb. v6. What do I need to unplug, and where is it located? My sticker under the hood is missing, so I can't get the info I need there, and searching is getting me nowhere.

on my 85' i found the wires coming out of the back of the distributor, and followed them back by the firewall, and there was a plug. this needed to be unplugged while i was setting the timing. then once timing was set, i plugged it back in...runs GREAT now...Rick

this is for a 5.0, IDK if yours would be the same.
