acceleration & upshifting problem
acceleration & upshifting problem
First off I have an 86 z28 305 with a good deal of mileage. Its been well taken care of only non stock part is a new rad. Its an auto trans & I just trans flushed & did a generic clean up on everything. When accelerating between 30 to 50 depends really my rpm spikes and the car won't shift up so I just take my foot off the gas and put it back down and it jumps forward and jumps into gear. There's no loud sounds or anything it runs like a charm elsewise. It stalls out occasionally on an uneven ground but I never thought anything of it because it only does it when I'm low on fuel and from what I know that's just my carb?
The best I can describe my problem would be this
Turn on car & drive like you would normally. Car hits about 40 or so and the engine roars and decides to not shift so my rpms spike and the car won't accelerate. I let up on the gas and push back down and it jumps forward and seems to be just fine again. It feels as though its in between first and second or second and third. I can't tell for sure.

Re: acceleration & upshifting problem
Any ideas? This is my daily driver and I'm going to need to drive it places unless I find out that I really shouldn't. Which is probably the case. :| Any ideas though? Thanks.
Re: acceleration & upshifting problem
there is a tranny section in this forum. it sure sounds like a slipping 3/4 clutch which is a very common problem with that trany.
But, don't go running off ***** nilly thinking that you can slap in a new clutch pack and be done.
if you keep driving the vehicle, you will ultimately burn the tranny fluid and cause even more damage.
The tranny has to be dropped. If you have the tools it's not too difficult of a job. You should get it rebuilt and replace the TC at the same time. Sprags tend not to be part of a basic rebuild but should be replaced as well. Add in 12 quarts of fluid and you are looking at under $1,000 for a bench rebuild, sprags, TC and fluid. You'll need to add $500 or more to labor if you don't do it yourself.
Of course you could always drop the tranny, try and buy a used one from craigslist or a junk one for the boneyard and then risk making posts later about having just replaced your tranny a month ago, put the car in gear, stepped on the gas and heard "bang" and now you have no forward movement etc etc
it's up to you but repairs are part of owning older cars.
