Timing confusion

Ok so my car dose not want to pass smog for me And today I took it to a shop for an "emission diagnosis" the only problem he found was the timing. He said I had my timing at 20°. How I set my timing was disconnect the timing advance and have the gun pointed at the timing marks. Turned the distributor till 6°. I thought I had it set. The shop guy said I had to jump the connection on the obd1 connection. So I am confused on how I am supposed to set my timing. please help!

Re: Timing confusion

the SM states... you do short the ALDL port <> A&B terminal
but it's not needed.... I have timed with & without.... all my TPI cars at least 50 times... made no differnece
it's a must to disconnect the ADV Brown with black stripe.......

Re: Timing confusion

But I mean I did exactly that and he says my timing was at 20° and in my opinion it runs to smooth to be off by 14°.
