Where is the vats decoder module located on a 1989 GTA Trans Am?

 

Anybody know?

 

Are you wanting to disable it or determine the resistance in the chip in the key? I thnk the vats is actually part of the computer program.

 

If you have to change it youll have fun.. Its between the firewall and bolted to the AC duct work..

 

I believe I have traced that to be my problem. I have purchased the bypass module from Hawks. It has 4 wires to be connected. One of them has to be connected to one of the wires from the vats module. I have removed 2/3 of the d(*&^%%*)mm dash and havn't located it yet. The wires from the switch are supposed to go to it. When I traced them, they go into a harness and are lost. Is it part of the ECM ? My ECM bad? Followed all the info on here about troubleshooting. Car won't start, won't turn over ect. This is a one owner 22,000 mile TA I have had forever. Always stored inside. About to set it on fire!!!!!!not. It has all the typical symptons of a vats problem, but I can't find it. If it's part of the ECM, how do I test that or just try another ECM? Thanks again

 

I know when you have a prom burned you can have VATS turned off so I think it's just part of the program.

 

The VATS module is a seperate module and iirc it's up in the dash behind the radio and maybe a little to the drivers side.
The VATS sends an OK signal to the engine computer so maybe when a chip is burned an always 'OK' can be programmed in to allow the car to start.

 

Keep going.... you have to remove 3/3 of the entire dash to find it. It is bolted to the HVAC plenum behind the dash.
