HELP! RPM fluctuating on acceleration.

The Camaro seems to be dying. Obviously Im not too savvy with type of thing so I'll do my best to explain. This just happened maybe a couple days ago and was really bad today. As I accelerate the RPMs will drop pretty dramatically. In DRIVE it will reach about 3400 RPMs then drop anywhere from 2500-3000 then back up to 3400 pretty quickly and will consistently do this as well as back fire. In OVERDRIVE it does basically the same thing. While accelerating to 3200 RPMs it will drop a few hundred and back up, drop a few hundred and back up. So, how screwed am I? I'll try my best to try and describe anything I missed if someone asks. Thanks in advance.

Re: HELP! RPM fluctuating on acceleration.

My 88 do the same, mine its a 2.8 mpfi T5, always i hit the gas on throttle, changing to any gear, or just after wait on the red light i push the gas, first the rpm jump, then the rmp drop dramatically and finally go up again , i feel not the power of the engine until the "go up again", i have new spark plugs, ignition coil, and spark plug wires, what it could be?
