Oil Filter Sizes what ones better

So I did not relize they had a long and a short oil filter for our cars?

Which one is better and why is this?

I just went with the longer K&N one.

Re: Oil Filter Sizes what ones better

I'm still using the old AC Delco style 1 quart filters. I tried the 2 quart type and it hit off my 7 qt oil pan.

A larger oil filter will also more capacity for oil and should have more surface area for the filter.

Old page but interesting cut outs of filters: http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/index.html

Anymore most of the high end filters are getting good enough it's personal pref IMO.

I've been using the larger K&N 2 quart oil filters with no ill effects.

I just don't understand why the smaller, shorter filter would be specified. There is plenty of room for the large one. From what I remember, the sbc trucks got the tall filter, the cars got the shortie.

Re: Oil Filter Sizes what ones better

Some cars such as my bonneville need a small filter because it would hang much lower than the frame rail and might get hit otherwise. On our cars the only issues might be oil cooler sandwhich, headers, or oversized oil pan.

I've used both kinds, no noticeable difference in operation. Though more filter area makes sense to me, so since it fits fine I usually use the larger one.
