Idle Air Control(IAC) adjustment problem
Idle Air Control(IAC) adjustment problem
i was adjusting my IAC adjustment fallowing the stickie by Tom Keliher. so i put the U shape paper clip into A and B inputs .. and turrn the switch on, but dont start the engine. wait 30 secs then disconected IAC cable ,turned on the engine, but the engine woudlnt start, just crank.. it would feel like it wanted to start, but it wouldnt. so i was confused.. put the IAC clable back and remove the paper clip... now it doesnt want to start..doesnt even crank no more... the security lights stays on when i have the ignition on... did i do anything to activate my vats system???

Re: Idle Air Control(IAC) adjustment problem
The IAC is not adjustable. Its position is set by the closed loop idle logic within the ECM. What the paperclip really does is seats the IAC by fully extending it. This is mainly used for setting the min air for the throttle body.
By seating it, you have effectively moved the IAC to a different position than where the computer thinks it is. This will cause a hard start as there is no IAC airflow to help the engine fire up. To restart the car, slightly crack open the throttle, and crank the engine. Hold the throttle open to let the car idle for a minute or two, and then shut the engine off. This will allow the ECM to repark the IAC and get it back in sync.
