intermittent starter problems?!?!
I installed a new mini torque starter on my engine. It was completely fine w/o shims for the first 2 or 3 months. Now, occasionally when the engine is hot, it will make loud clanking noises when I go to start it. It seems to do this more often when the engine is hot. It starts just fine more often than not w/ no clanking noise. What could this be???

If the starter gear comes out and just hits the flywheel without the starter gear spinning it'll make a metallic "Clank". You can duplicate this sound by unhooking the power wire that goes from the starter to the battery and putting power to the small tab where the purple wire attaches. Shimming problems usually have a grinding noise, not really a "clank" or "bang" type noise.
Do you have headers that are getting the starter solenoid too hot?
