1988 305 - L-98 or L-05

Hi,

I have a 1988 IROC. Had a look for the engine number, and behind the air con and under years of oil it appears the first character is "V" (built in Clint) and the suffix is "PJC".

I always thought the engine was an L98, however when I looked up the PJC code I got this:

Small Block Suffix Code

1 Record (100 Maximum displayed)
Code Year CID Vehicle HP RPO Trans Carb
PJC 88 350 Truck 195 L-05 4-Brl

My suspicion is that the engine code/suffix lookup is wrong on:

http://www.chevymania.com/partsid/

Doing a Google search I've noticed other people with 1988 350 IROCs being confused by the same lookup.

Any suggestions?

What heads does it have? Pull teh valve covers and see waht the last 3 digits of the casting number is. If it's 083 it's 90 percent probably an L98. If it's 193 it's 90 percent probably an L05.

It's got the factory TPI on it I assume, yes? If so I'd just chalk it up to GM using the same block casting for different vehicles.

@InfernalVortex - thanks for the tips, I'll check this out.

Yes, it appears to be factory TPI, centre bolt rocker covers etc.

It also appears that in 1988 the L98 and L05 had hydraulic roller lifters. Mayby the L98 block is the same as the L05 block?

Other people seem to have pondered the same question.

Can you think of any differences in 1988 for an L98 and L05 block?
