82 Camaro v8 wont start...
Hey guys, Im new to this board but i thought Id ask for some help. Just bought an 82 SC with the 305 carb V8 (auto) with an edelbrock 650CFM carb. The guy I bought it from said it would stall when he drove it. Maybe a mile down the road or maybe 10 miles. Anyway my buddy and I noticed the Dist. didnt have a vacuum advance and thought that could be part of the issue. I bought a couple of different ones but the connections were wrong. Tried to install the original Dist he gave me but I made a super noob mistake and didnt mark the positions when I took it out. Anyway i turned the HB manually to the timing mark. inserted the dist with the pointer and #1 and cranked it but no go. It would make the cranking noise but wouldnt turn over. Any ideas??? Also just read Damons post on none computer controlled HEI Dist. just to verify I dont need to connect the 4 prong plug that goes to the ECM if i go that route?? Any help appreciated. Not a car guy i bought this one to fix it and im learning as I go.

Yes, you need a vacuum advanced distributor with any aftermarket non-computer carb. The connectors will not match, you have to wire it in yourself. Cannot use a cc-dist without a cc-carb, or visa versa.
www.thirdgen.org/carbswap I think has the instructions.
To set distributor, remove #1 spark plug, and stick finger in plug hole. Have someone manually turn over motor until you feel outward air pressure - then stop there, and set balancer mark at zero. Then stab distributor, and wherever the rotor points, that dist cap position HAS to be #1 spark plug wire. Route other wires according to firing order. Then, adjust timing up to about 10 degrees BTDC, and adjust from there.

Thanks Cam, Thats what I thought, IDK why the guy I bought it from did this. I got it to start recently turned out the dizzy was 180* out. I will order a dizzy with vac advance soon. For now Im still knee deep in fixing other issues. The car died in my drive way today. I know the timing is off just let my buddy borrow my light. I do know my ALT is seizing up Im getting a high squeal from it. Anyway do you know what controls spark on this car? cant find it anywhere?? is the spark created mechanically or from the ALT?? I ak cause I got the car dirt cheap because the guy said it stalled out of no where and im wondering if the spark is from the ALT if that could cause it. Thanks for the link and info.

yup got that aperion. I got the car to start. I was wondering what causes the spark in the dizzy. After reviewing the previous statement "I was wondering what causes the spark in the dizzy", i realized what a silly question I just asked. Please disregard my ignorance.
