1985 Z28 Advice

Hello everyone! I am new to the site and this is my first thread. I have an 85 Z28. It's in great shape with only 56,000 miles. It has a 305 "H" motor in it. I am looking for some advise on some things I could do to get a little more HP. Like all of us I'm on a budget, but I am willing to invest some time and money. I'm not looking for high HP, just something a little more than what I have to make it a little more fun.

Thanks for the response. I have been searching through threads and I think I'm gonna start with a new exhaust. Should I be worried about emissions testing? I'm not sure how far back they go for that. Maybe an intake after that?

Check state laws/regulations. Some states test, some don't.

Re: 1985 Z28 Advice

I checked into my state (ny) regulations. Since my car is over 25 years old it is exempt from emissions testing. Should I remove all emissions. Should I get a new catalytic converter with my new exhaust or just get rid of it.

That HO has a carb right? I've seen guys grind the tab for the secondary barrels, so they open up 100%.
You can advance the timing to 10-12*, listen for spark knock.
Get a K&N air filter.

The stock HO exhaust manifolds, Y-pipe, and intermediate pipe were as good as if got--IIRC, there were no larger systems. You can purchase a direct-fit Catco high-flow cat. I've read that 5 hp is a common increase in power where after market cats are concerned. 25-40 would be very optimistic on an gutted OE system.

More info about exhaust manifold size and a pic of the HO (L69) Y-pipe in comparison with an LG4 Y:
