Smog/Air Pump

Have one question that maybe someone could answer. I have a noisy air pump that sound like a bad bearing that appeared right after I had the car transported down from S .Jersey and read an article in ThirdGen board that you can remove the pump from the car by rerouting the serpentine belt (“How to Remove Smog Pump Your Smog Pump From Your Serpentine Belt Equipped Third Gen” by Pablo Morales.) with a longer (96.8”) serpentine belt. Any comments or experience in this validity to that theory? Can it operate just as well or will be something take away from the equation? THANKS.

Re: Smog/Air Pump

of course you can remove the AIR pump. You do need the longer belt per the instructions on this site you find with the search function.

I removed the AIR pump on mine.

Re: Smog/Air Pump

It works fine - although you might need a slightly different length belt - seems like everyone needs a slightly different length than that write-up mentions - just have to experiment a bit - buy that size, one up, and one down, and then return the 2 you don't use.

Re: Smog/Air Pump

The air pump is just an emissions device. As long as you don't need to have a visual inspection for emission testing then removing it is fine.

The purpose of the air pump is to put air into the exhaust system during engine warm up to reduce the emission levels of the rich exhaust. Once the engine is at operating temperature, the air pump does nothing.
