Steering Column Loose

My steering column is loose on my 89 GTA. Checked the column "U" brkt. to dash and is tight. Steering wheel shifts inside column about 1/4-1/2 inch. Is this a pretty tough job requiring special tools ? How much internal stuff is going to have to be removed ?

Appreciate all feedback.

Re: Steering Column Loose

WOW...Now I know why the dealership charged me 300 bucks back in 99 when I bought my 89. Steering column was so loose it was dangerous. Now it has came loose again...I believe I'll use loctite 242 on the bolts this time around. I really believe this happens when the driver gets in and out of his vehicle. First thing one grabs is the steering wheel when he gets out and in...Although I'm aware of this and try not to use the steering wheel getting in and out of my car

Re: Steering Column Loose

When I bought my car was fine. 4 years later it failed State Inspection. Cost me $100 to fix. Shop there was only 1 bolt still holding it together (i knew it was real bad, just not that bad) & even that bolt was only in by a few threads. 7 hrs later I had my car back. That was 3 yrs ago & I have not used the steering wheel once since then. I hold the seat & slide down the seat back to get in & use the A-pillar to get out. Fabric barely shows the wear of me doing that too. I'd rather replace fabric than lose steering of my car at 65mph anyways!
